This 11th Century castle epitomizes traditional Spanish elegance. Superlatives fail to describe the beauty this castle radiates as its architecture congeals perfectly with its majestic surroundings. While so many contemporary manors are designed with a dissident extravagance that clashes with the inherent beauty of their surroundings, the Castel dEscales exudes a highly refined look that acts in confluence with the Spanish countryside and the snow-capped Pyrenees to achieve a full, regal presence. However, this is not to say that the castle is lacking modern luxuries, as it was fully restored by an architect, and comprehensively modernised to provide bright and spacious accommodation.
The Castle-Tower is doumented from the year 1059. Originally it belonged to the families Desvern and Desbac. In the twelfth century it was occupied by the family of the Sitjar de Girona and later the family of Ramon Renal who acquired the castle in 1266. By the marriage of Caterina Renal with Bernat de Sitjar, it returns to appear with the the Sitjar surname. In 1493 Maria Sitjar sells the Castle to Joan Campmany and then he sold it to the Colomer Family the 1620.
During the 18th century the castle belonged to the Guinart family. This fortified masia is very well-known by "the Tower" less than i its more primitive sections in the angular tower of rectangular level. A gothic gallery of the fifteenth century can be observed to which it is acceded from the stairs of the central patio.
